VERTIGO: is there a Solution?

Are you among the hundreds of thousands each year who suffer from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)?  BPPV is a type of vertigo I often see in my Oakland chiropractic office when patients complain of dizziness.  Though vertigo can be a symptom of other diseases for instance, vestibular neuritis, Meniere's disease, head trauma or migraines, BPPV can be distinguished by dizziness that comes on with a change in body and head position.

If you have residual dizziness after an episode of vertigo, a study published in Journal of Clinical Neurology correlated early successful repositioning maneuvers with a disappearance of this dizziness within 3 months.

In the office, there is a simple test to see if the vertigo is BPPV and which side is affected.  Then we can proceed with treatment including the Epley Maneuver to put the head in specific positions for a set amount of time to help remove the cause of the intermittent vertigo.  This helps to treat the cause of the vertigo, which is the formation of crystals inside the inner ear that  are triggering the receptors for head position and overstimulating these receptors.  The Epley Maneuver helps to allow these crystals to leave the inner ear and stop the over-stimulation.

Additionally, I have found my patients with this condition, frequently have neck pain and jaw tension.  Treating this can also help with resolving the dizziness.  Sometimes the symptoms of vertigo can resolved in one visit to my office.  Other times several visits may be necessary.  Additionally, home exercises and teaching the patient the proper way to do the manuever at home helps to restore natural balance quicker.  So, if you experience vertigo that last lasts beyond a day, come in for treatment right away to determine if you have BPPV.
